How Long Does It Take to Get a TEFL Job After Certification?

The Timeline Varies More Than Most People Expect

"I'll finish my TEFL course on Friday and start teaching on Monday." This is an optimistic but not entirely unrealistic scenario for some online positions — and a very unrealistic one for most teaching abroad roles.

The time between completing your TEFL certification and starting your first paid teaching position varies enormously based on factors you can control and factors you can't. Understanding those factors helps you plan your transition, manage your finances, and avoid the anxiety of comparing your timeline to someone else's.

Typical Timelines by Teaching Context

Online Tutoring: 1–4 Weeks

Online tutoring platforms have the fastest hiring cycles of any teaching context. Applications are typically reviewed within days, onboarding (profile approval, test lessons, background checks where required) takes 1–2 weeks, and your first paid session could happen within days of approval.

The catch: Being hired and earning meaningful income are different timelines. You might be approved on iTalki in week one, but having a student base that generates consistent weekly income typically takes 1–3 months.

Language Schools in Southeast Asia: 4–8 Weeks

For popular TEFL markets like Vietnam, Thailand, and Cambodia, the process typically involves:

  1. Application and CV submission (ongoing, usually via email to schools directly or through recruitment agencies) — 1–2 weeks of active applications
  2. Initial interview (often via Zoom) — scheduled 1–2 weeks after application
  3. Second interview or demo lesson — 1–2 weeks after first
  4. Offer and contract signing — 1 week
  5. Visa processing and relocation — 2–4 weeks

Total: Typically 4–8 weeks from first application to first teaching day. If you apply in-country on a tourist visa before arranging your work permit, it can be faster but carries legal risk.

South Korea (EPIK / Hagwon): 2–4 Months

EPIK, the government teaching programme, has two main intake cycles per year (spring/February and autumn/August) with application deadlines 3–4 months in advance. The official application process includes document preparation, medical checks, apostilles, and government processing — it's thorough and takes time.

Private hagwons (academies) can hire faster (4–8 weeks), but still require visa processing and document verification.

Japan (JET Programme): 6–9 Months

JET applications typically open in the autumn for placements the following August. The process is intentionally thorough — application, screening, interview, provisional placement — and the longest hiring process of any major TEFL market. Apply to JET with a full academic year of lead time.

Private eikaiwa schools in Japan (NOVA, AEON, etc.) hire year-round with shorter cycles (6–12 weeks).

Middle East (UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait): 2–4 Months

Premium positions in the Gulf states involve comprehensive background checks, credential verification, and often require degree certificates with attested copies. The process is rigorous but well-organised, and schools in this region are experienced at onboarding international teachers. Expect 2–3 months minimum.

Factors That Speed Up Your Job Search

Applying actively across multiple channels: Teachers who send 15–20 targeted applications per week find employment significantly faster than those who send 3–4 and wait. Use direct school applications, recruitment agencies, job boards (Dave's ESL Cafe, TEFL.com, Go Overseas), and community forums.

Having documentation ready: Police background check, certified copies of certificates, passport copies — have all of these prepared before you start applying seriously. Scrambling for documents after receiving an offer adds weeks to your timeline.

Targeting markets with year-round demand: Online platforms and Southeast Asian markets hire year-round. Countries with specific intake cycles (Japan, Korea) require advance planning.

Being genuinely flexible: Teachers open to multiple countries, age groups, and school types find positions faster than those with narrow requirements.

Factors That Slow It Down

Targeting only competitive, highly desirable markets: If you specifically want a JET placement in Kyoto or a British Council position in Madrid, you're competing with the strongest candidates in the market and the hiring windows are narrow.

Incomplete documentation: Many schools won't process an application without a clean police background check, which can take 2–4 weeks to obtain.

Low season: Some markets have hiring lulls (mid-contract year, peak summer in some markets). Knowing the hiring calendar for your target market helps you apply at the right time.

An uncompetitive application: A poor cover letter, no profile photo, or a CV that hasn't been tailored to teaching will slow any application process.

A Realistic Planning Timeline

For most new TEFL teachers planning to teach abroad:

  • Finish course + gather documents: 2–3 weeks
  • Active job application phase: 3–6 weeks
  • Interview and offer process: 2–4 weeks
  • Visa and relocation: 3–6 weeks

Total realistic window: 2–4 months from certificate to classroom for abroad positions. For online, considerably faster.

Budget accordingly. Having 3–4 months of living expenses saved before you start your job search reduces pressure and allows you to make better decisions.
