PPP TEFL Lesson Plan Template

The PPP framework is the most widely taught lesson structure in TEFL: Presentation, Practice, Production. It works because it moves students from controlled input to freer output in a clear sequence.

When to use PPP

Use PPP for grammar and vocabulary lessons, especially with beginner and lower-intermediate learners. It is also ideal for observed lessons because the structure is easy to follow.

ObjectiveStudents will correctly use regular past simple verbs in a short written recount
  1. Presentation: Show a diary entry from a teacher weekend. Elicit the -ed ending and board a timeline.
  2. Practice: Students complete a gap-fill about the teacher weekend in pairs.
  3. Production: Students write five sentences about their own last weekend and read one aloud.

Common PPP mistakes

  • Spending too long on presentation and leaving no time for production
  • Making practice activities too difficult too soon
  • Not giving students a real reason to use the language in production
